Additives for LIPF6 Stabilization

Stabilizing LiPF6 can extend the cycle and calendar life of lithium-ion batteries. Its decomposition—accelerated by exposure of the battery to high temperature—forms HF, which leads to corrosion in the cell and general cell degradation. HF also can lead to dissolution of metals in the cathode that can cause detrimental plating in the cell.

Novolyte has developed a series of additives that can stabilize LiPF6 based electrolytes and extend lithium-ion battery life. The amount of HF formation in an electrolyte is directly proportional to the presence of color in the electrolyte. Adding small amounts of Novolyte's B18 additive (usually 0.5 to 2 wt%) can effectively stabilize the color of electrolytes at room temperature and high temperature. The figures below show the color change of the Novolyte electrolytes containing various amounts of our B18 additive stored under room temperature and at 50°C for 6 months compared to a control.

Color testing is performed on a standard EC/EMC (30/70 wt%) 1 M LiPF6 electrolyte. Similar results have been obtained using other electrolyte formulations.
