2,6-Naphthalenedicarboxylic Acid (CAS: 1141-38-4)
Common Names: 2,6-NDA, HNDA
Key Diacid for the Production of PEN and High-Performance Liquid Crystal Polymers
Novolyte has been producing the highest quality HNDA for more than 10 years at our Baton Rouge, LA, plant. HNDA is a key co-monomer for the production of both PEN (polyethylene naphthalate) and LCP (liquid crystal) polymers. Polymers utilizing HNDA exhibit improved physical properties, especially at elevated temperatures. HNDA based polymers have demonstrated improved vapor barrier performance, ULV resistance, and chemical resistance compared to other polyesters. HNDA will also reduce the melt flow of LCPs, allowing faster processing at lower temperature and the production of thinner parts with the lowest shrinkage.
HNDA can be added as a co-monomer along with purified terephthalic acid (PTA) to produce high performance blends of PET and PEN resins with no modification to existing equipment. Both PTA and HNDA plus a diol co-monomer will give off water during the condensation reaction. NDC (naphthalene dimethyl carboxylate) will give off methanol, posing a processing challenge due to flammability and toxicity.
